FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 2, 2026, Ottawa, ON – Fertilizer Canada has released updated 4R Practice Guidance for Canadian cropping systems, incorporating the latest nutrient stewardship research and emerging technologies to support efficient fertilizer use. The updated document provides 4R-designated agronomists and Certified Crop Advisors (CCAs) with current, region-specific guidance to support nutrient management planning with farmers.
4R Nutrient Stewardship is a science-based approach to fertilizer management that applies the right source of nutrients at the right rate, right time, and right place to improve nutrient use efficiency and reduce environmental losses.
“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrient management, which is why these tables are such an important tool for agronomists and Certified Crop Advisors developing 4R plans tailored to individual farm operations,” says Michael Bourque, President and CEO of Fertilizer Canada. “Because 4R Nutrient Stewardship is grounded in science, it is essential that these resources reflect the latest research and innovations available.”
In 2025, more than 10.2 million acres in Canada were managed under a 4R plan. While many farmers believe they are implementing 4R practices, formal nutrient management planning remains limited. According to the 2024 Fertilizer Use Survey, 65 per cent of farmers said they believed they were following 4R practices, while only 17 per cent had a formal 4R plan in place.
The 4R Practice Guidance cover nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sulphur fertilizer management across Canadian cropping systems, with recommendations tailored by crop and region where applicable.
4R practices are categorized as basic, intermediate, or advanced across each of the Rs, recognizing that appropriate nutrient management practices vary by crop, region, and soil conditions. Advanced practices represent the highest level of alignment with 4R principles and nutrient stewardship outcomes.
