“A key to diversifying Canada’s trade and strengthening our competitiveness is ensuring our supply chains are efficient, reliable and resilient. Fertilizer Canada supports the introduction of Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act. Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner is a competitive advantage in an uncertain world. We welcome measures to accelerate project approvals, strengthen trade corridors and infrastructure, advance trade digitalization and modernize federal labour frameworks.
“The fertilizer industry is a super user of Canada’s supply chains, and we have consistently advocated for policies that expand infrastructure capacity and reduce the risk of disruptive work stoppages. We are pleased to see measures that reflect our recommendations, including modernizing transportation infrastructure and operations, providing greater investment flexibility for Canadian Port Authorities, updates to geographic certification and addressing bottlenecks along critical trade corridors. It is very encouraging that the Government of Canada will formally designate strategic trade corridors.
“Proposed changes to the Canada Labour Code are also a very positive step in the right direction. We support measures to strengthen the collective bargaining process through longer timelines and the use of special mediators. Swift and predictable dispute resolution is essential for Canadian employers and workers alike. Fertilizer Canada will continue to advocate for Cabinet authority to compel binding arbitration when a labour disruption threatens the national interest.
