Our Focus Safety & Security Standardized Codes of Practices

Ammonium Nitrate and Calcium Ammonium Nitrate

Ensuring fertilizer safety requires standardized Codes of Practice and a coordinated effort among all industry stakeholders.

The Agricultural Ammonium Nitrate and Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Code of Practice provides best practices for safe and secure ammonium nitrate and calcium ammonium nitrate storage and handling. It was developed in close partnership with industry officials and parallels existing federal regulation. Through this Code of Practice, agri-retailers who sell ammonium nitrate and calcium ammonium nitrate provide their employees with the training and information to assist in complying with federal security regulations and the industry Code of Practice.

Comment Period for 2023 Revisions to the Fertilizer Canada Ammonium Nitrate and Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Code of Practice

As part of Fertilizer Canada’s commitment to continuous improvement, a review and update of the 2015 and 2019 versions of the AN and CAN Codes are underway. In recognizing the shifts within the agricultural industry and reduced numbers of agri-retail sites seeking certification under the AN Code, Fertilizer Canada is amalgamating the AN Code and CAN Code into a single Code of Practice. Sites that are currently certified under either of the Codes will continue to be eligible for certification under the amalgamated Code, with additional requirements for AN fertilizer according indicated in the Code protocols as applicable to regulatory and industry best practices standards.

A 30-day Comment Period is now open on the proposed amendments to the 2015 AN Code and 2019 CAN Code Protocols. You are invited to review the revised protocols and submit comments by October 1, 2022.
