4R Climate Smart Strategy Offers Global Solution to Emission Reductions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 5, 2018

KATOWICE, POLAND – Governments, agriculture stakeholders and growers have the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35 per cent by implementing the 4R Climate Smart Strategy. Doing so would significantly contribute to global targets under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Based on the Nitrous Oxide Emission Reduction Protocol (NERP), the 4R Climate Smart Strategy is a science-based framework using the principles of 4R Nutrient Stewardship (Right Source @ Right Rate, Right Time, Right Place®) to create an actionable outline for widespread implementation of sustainable agriculture. Under the Strategy, research has shown that growers can reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35 per cent.

“New Canadian science shows greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by two to three megatonnes annually if the 4R Climate Smart Strategy was implemented in Western Canada alone,” said Clyde Graham, Executive Vice President of Fertilizer Canada. “With the universality of this Strategy, we have the opportunity to make real strides towards reducing emissions globally.”

Fertilizer Canada urges the delegates of COP24 to adopt the 4R Climate Smart Strategy as a tangible step towards creating global emissions reductions. Today, Graham presented at A Farmers’ Driven Climate Change Agenda – the Climate Change and Agricultural Alliance, a side event at COP24 organized by the World Farmers’ Organization, the International Fertilizer Association and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, on the benefits of the 4R Climate Smart Strategy as a global solution. He is available for media interviews from Katowice, Poland, until December 12 and afterwards from Ottawa, Canada. Please contact Kelly McCarthy at the coordinates below to arrange an interview.
