Fertilizer Canada is a proud partner of Canada’s freight rail system and supports the government’s efforts to improve rail safety, competition, and transparency.
In an appearance before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities on Sept. 12, Fertilizer Canada commended the intent of the proposed legislation in Bill C-49 and provided recommendations to enhance the legislation further to strengthen competition and protect captive shippers.
Fertilizer Canada’s proposed recommendations are twofold:
- Removal of exclusions (product, geography) under the proposed Long-Haul Interswitching mechanism; and
- Removal of the railways’ ability to remove an interchange with 60 days’ notice.
